It’s that time again when I am asked if it’s okay to decorate for the holidays. I answer with a resounding YES!
One of the most magical parts of the holidays is the emotion that it conjures up. People think of past holidays with loved ones, they reminisce about the holidays when they were younger, they recall the time spent decorating the tree or taking kids to see Santa. When people think about the holidays it generally conjures up happy times. This is what decorating your house will do!
Three things to consider, though, before you pull out every chachki you own:
1. Before you add things to a room to decorate, make sure you take some things out. More than likely, you decluttered before putting your house on the market. You don’t want to undo the benefit of having cleared some space. If it feels crowded, tone it down.
2. Add some fresh, holiday scents. Balsam, Fir, Spruce and Pine are all wonderful scents. Some nice any time scents are cinnamon, vanilla, orange or spice. The goal is to scent the room lightly and don’t over do it. Some people simmer a pot of cider to add to the staging.
3. Be attentive to what you are blocking. Displaying your menorah on the fireplace, hanging garland on your handrail and hanging mistletoe in your arched doorway will enhance the room. Putting decals on the slider that overlooks the water or the woods would detract. Place your accessories wisely!
